If you don’t know what to spend your time with at Lake Balaton: we compiled the best places for you.
Keszthely is a wonderful historic city, aside from Füred there is nothing similar to it on the shore of Lake Balaton. For exactly for this reason it’s a great destination, if besides sunbathing you would like to fill your holiday with some cultural programs.
Let’s review the hotels first: it’s funny that our recommendations are not in Keszthely, rather in its vicinity. One of them is in Hévíz, the Danubius Hotel Spa, a real retro-pearl, with an enthusiastic and devoted staff, and enduring internal design, which is already decades old but it’s still very much lovable. The other one is in Vonyarcvashegy: Hotel Zenit is our great favorite, one of the best destinations all around Lake Balaton. You can expect spacious, modern rooms, a large and high quality wellness section and far better than average food.
When you arrive in Keszthely, there is a wide selection of excellent programs you can choose from. One of them is of course Festetics castle: the park by itself is deserving of a visit, and it’s free, but the interior halls have also been wonderfully renovated, and there is a small palm garden that was designed personally by Eiffel.
Whoever wishes for somewhat simpler entertainment also happens to be in the best place: you can find the Horror-museum here, where the cruelest methods of torture are presented in a bit cheap but rather entertaining way. And of course the Sex wax-museum is also here, where not at all abashed wax figures display the most popular sex poses, with a historic approach. And the Cadillac-museum is also in the city, you shouldn’t miss this one, not just because there is a car here that was in the movie Godfather.
If you would like to go to a spa, there is the city spa: a heated pool, a 19th century beach island and quality cocktail bars await you – there are so many things on the beach that you will not even be interested in Lake Balaton. And a little bit toward the south you will also find the nudist beach, where you can confidently take off your clothes and swim in the water naked, among much younger beachgoers than at Levendula on the north shore.
But if you rather desire some activity, the Gyenesdiás adventure beach is also nearby: an enchanting panoramic view, expect rainforest conditions and a tricky obstacle course. You will survive, but you are likely to sweat a lot.
If you desire a good meal, you will not be disappointed in the region either. The Balaton fish and producers’ market, a wonderfully beautiful market awaits you with fresh Balaton fish, bio-foods and a great atmosphere, but if you wouldn’t like to bother with the catch yourself, you should go to Uncle Oszi, he operates one of the best fish parlors in the entire Balaton region. And if you desire a bit more complex gastronomical experience, visit the small restaurant of Attila Bakos, which is always full of foreign tourists, and which serves the classic dishes of Hungarian cuisine from excellent raw materials, in the classical manner.
